How to Set a Custom Image as Your Zoom Virtual Background

Zoom lets you upload any image as your background -- here is how to add one, and how to make it actually look good.

  1. Open Background & Filters

    In the Zoom desktop app, click the up-arrow next to the video icon (or go to Settings), then "Background & Filters," where Zoom's built-in options and your own uploads both live.

  2. Add your own image

    Click the "+" icon in that panel and select "Add Image," then browse to and choose the photo or graphic you want to use; it is added to your personal gallery for future meetings too.

  3. Use an image close to your camera's aspect ratio

    A 16:9 image (1920x1080 is a safe standard) fills the frame cleanly; a mismatched aspect ratio gets stretched or cropped in ways that look obviously off.

  4. Select it and check the preview

    Click the uploaded thumbnail to apply it, and check the live preview before joining -- edges around hair or hand movement are where quality problems show up first.

  5. Light your face evenly if you do not have a green screen

    Zoom's background removal relies on distinguishing you from what is behind you, so even, front-facing light (avoiding strong backlight from a window) meaningfully improves edge detection without any physical screen.

  6. Turn it off quickly if needed

    The same "Background & Filters" panel (or a shortcut in some versions) lets you switch back to "None" instantly if the effect is glitching badly in a particular meeting.

Why the background sometimes glitches without a green screen

Zoom's virtual background feature uses software-based person detection instead of a literal green screen in most modern setups, which works reasonably well but is more sensitive to lighting, camera quality, and background clutter than a true chroma-key setup.
