How to Convert Text to a Table in Word

Tap through each step to turn your list into a table.

  1. Prepare text with a consistent separator

Get your text ready as comma- or tab-separated values, or as a list broken into separate lines.

  2. Select the text to convert

Drag to select the entire block of text you want to turn into a table.

  3. Go to Insert > Table > Convert Text to Table

On the Insert tab, click the Table icon, then choose "Convert Text to Table."

  4. Confirm the separator and click OK

Check the separator Word has automatically detected, then click OK to generate the table.

  5. Why it is useful

When you need to quickly turn a list from Notepad or elsewhere into a table, you can convert it instantly instead of building each cell one by one.

Turn a plain list into a table in seconds

If you have a list organized in a notes app or elsewhere that needs to become a table, the Convert Text to Table feature saves you from manually creating and filling in each cell.

Keep your separator consistent before converting

Mixing commas, tabs, and other separators in the same block of text can cause columns to shift or misalign. Clean up the text to use one consistent separator before running the conversion for the most reliable result.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if my separators are inconsistent?

Mixed separators can cause table columns to misalign, so it is best to standardize on one separator, such as commas or tabs, before converting.

Can I convert a table back into plain text?

Yes. Select the table, then go to Layout > Convert to Text to turn it back into plain text with your chosen separator.
