Using Picture Bullets Instead of Standard Bullet Points

Tap a step below to see it explained in order.

  1. Select the text you want to turn into a list

Drag to highlight the items you want the picture bullet applied to.

  2. Click the arrow next to "Bullets"

On the Home tab, click the small dropdown arrow beside the bullet list icon.

  3. Choose "Define New Bullet"

At the bottom of the dropdown menu, click Define New Bullet.

  4. Pick an image with the "Picture" button

Click the Picture button and choose an icon image or a photo from your computer.

  5. Why this is useful

Swapping a plain dot or square for a brand logo or a distinctive icon gives any list a noticeably more polished, personal look.

Give an ordinary list some personality

Standard bullet characters are functional but forgettable. Swapping them for a small logo, a themed icon, or a photo turns a plain list into something that visually reinforces your brand or the topic at hand β€” useful for proposals, newsletters, and any document meant to stand out.

Getting the best results

Pick a simple, high-contrast image β€” busy or highly detailed pictures shrink down poorly at bullet size and can look muddy. Square or roughly square images tend to scale most predictably. If the image includes a background color you don't want, save it with a transparent background before importing it as a bullet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I resize the picture bullets?

Yes β€” the bullet image scales proportionally with the font size of the list text, so increasing or decreasing the font size resizes the bullets to match.

Will the image print clearly?

Yes, picture bullets print just like regular text characters, so using a reasonably high-resolution image will keep it sharp on paper as well as on screen.
