How to Use Different Page Orientations Within One Word Document

Tap through each step to turn just one page landscape without disturbing the rest of your document.

  1. Place your cursor before the page you want to change

Click to position your cursor right at the start of the page you want to switch to landscape.

  2. Go to Layout β†’ Breaks β†’ Section Break (Next Page)

Insert section breaks around that page so it becomes its own separate section from the rest of the document.

  3. Click "Orientation" inside the new section

With your cursor inside that section, go to Layout β†’ Orientation and choose "Landscape."

  4. Confirm the other pages are unaffected

Check that the pages before and after keep their original portrait orientation, thanks to the section breaks.

  5. Why it is worth using

When you need to fit a wide table or chart into the middle of a report, this lets just that one page go landscape while everything else stays as it was.

Rotating the whole document for one wide table?

If you need to insert a wide table or chart in the middle of a report, switching the entire document to landscape throws off the layout of every other page. Using section breaks lets you flip just that one page while every other page keeps its original orientation.

Also worth checking: inserting regular page breaks

Understanding the difference between section breaks and ordinary page breaks gives you a lot more control over exactly how your document is laid out.
