How to Add a Header and Footer in Word

Tap each step to follow along in order.

  1. Find headers and footers on the Insert tab

On the Insert tab, click the "Header" or "Footer" button.

  2. Choose a style

Pick one of the built-in header or footer designs, or choose a blank layout.

  3. Add a title, page number, or other content

Type in whatever should repeat on every page β€” a document title, company name, or page number.

  4. Make the first page different

Check "Different First Page" so a cover page does not show the header or footer.

  5. Why it matters

Once set up, a title or page number repeats automatically on every page β€” no need to retype it by hand.

Perfect for long documents that need page numbers

For a document with many pages, there is no need to type a title or page number on each one by hand. Set up a header or footer once, and it repeats automatically across the whole document.

Keeping headers consistent across a long report

Using the left, center, and right tab stops inside the header lets you place a document title on the left, a company name in the middle, and a page number on the right, all neatly aligned. Unless a section genuinely needs its own style, keeping the same header and footer format throughout the document reads as more professional.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different header for each section?

Yes β€” insert a section break, then turn off "Link to Previous" so each section can have its own header and footer.

Can page numbers start from a specific number?

Yes β€” in the page number format settings, you can set the starting number to whatever you like.
