How to Customize a Heading Style in Word

Tap through each step to customize a heading style.

  1. Format the heading the way you want first

Manually format the text that already has a heading style applied with the font, color, and size you want.

  2. Right-click the style in the gallery

In the style gallery on the "Home" tab, right-click the heading style you want to update, such as "Heading 1."

  3. Choose "Update Heading 1 to Match Selection"

Clicking this option applies the formatting you just created directly to the style itself.

  4. Confirm it applies throughout the document

Every other heading using that same style updates to the new formatting at once.

  5. Why it is useful

Instead of reapplying formatting to every heading individually, updating the style itself keeps your entire document consistent much more easily.

Update every matching heading at once

Rather than reformatting each heading in a document one by one, updating the underlying style means every heading that uses it changes to the new look automatically, all at the same time.

Save your custom look for future documents

Once you like the formatting you have applied, use "Save as a New Style Set" in the style gallery so the same combination of heading styles is available whenever you start a new document.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I reuse a style I customized in other documents?

Yes β€” use "Save as a New Style Set" in the style gallery to make your customized style combination available when you start a new document.

Can I format Heading 1 and Heading 2 differently?

Yes β€” each heading level (Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3, and so on) is an independent style, so you can customize each one separately.
