How to Add Bullet Points and Numbered Lists in Word

Tap a step to see exactly how it works.

  1. Select the lines to list

Drag to select the lines you want to turn into a bulleted or numbered list.

  2. Apply bullet points

Click the bullet list icon on the Home tab and a dot or symbol is added before each line.

  3. Apply numbering

Click the numbering icon to automatically order the lines as 1, 2, 3, and so on.

  4. Change the bullet or number style

Click the small dropdown arrow to choose from different symbol shapes or numbering formats, such as roman numerals or letters.

  5. Create a sub-list

Press Tab to indent a line one level, creating a sub-list that shows hierarchy within your points.

Lists make long content easy to scan

When you need to lay out several items, a bulleted or numbered list lets a reader absorb the structure at a glance far faster than the same information written as a solid paragraph.

Bullets or numbers β€” which one fits?

Use numbers when the order genuinely matters, such as steps that must be followed in sequence. Use bullets when the items are equally weighted with no required order, like a list of features or ingredients β€” mixing the two styles in the same list usually signals it should be split into two.

Frequently Asked Questions

My numbering randomly restarts at 1 partway through.

A block of differently formatted text between list sections can break the numbering sequence. Right-click the number and choose "Restart at 1" or "Continue Numbering" to fix it.

Can I use my own custom symbol as a bullet?

Yes β€” open the bullet dropdown and choose "Define New Bullet" to pick any symbol, character, or even an image as your bullet marker.
