How to Change the Background Color of a Word Document

Tap through each step in order.

  1. Open the 'Design' tab

Click the 'Design' tab in the ribbon at the top.

  2. Click 'Page Color'

In the 'Page Background' group, select 'Page Color.'

  3. Choose the color you want

Pick from the standard color swatches, or click 'More Colors' to set a custom shade.

  4. What to know before printing

A background color shows on screen but doesn't print by default β€” you need to turn on a separate print option if you also want it to appear on the printed page.

  5. Remove the background color

Go back to 'Page Color' and choose 'No Color' to return to the plain white background.

A softer color can be easier on the eyes

If a stark white background feels harsh, switching to a soft, muted background color can reduce eye strain during long reading or editing sessions, and it's also a nice touch for decorating things like invitations or newsletters.

Beyond a flat color, there's gradients and textures too

Under 'Page Color β†’ Fill Effects,' you can choose a gradient, texture, pattern, or picture background instead of a single flat color, for a more decorative look.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get the background color to actually show up when I print?

In Word Options, under the 'Display' section, check 'Print background colors and images' β€” the background will then print along with the rest of the page.

Can I add a gradient or pattern to the background instead of a solid color?

Yes β€” under 'Page Color β†’ Fill Effects,' you can choose from gradient, texture, pattern, and picture options for the background style.
