How to Turn Off Automatic Hyperlinks in Word

Tap through each step to stop Word from automatically creating hyperlinks.

  1. Open File > Options

    Click the "File" tab in the top-left corner of Word, then select "Options."

  2. Go to the Proofing menu

    In the left-hand list of the Options window, select "Proofing."

  3. Click "AutoCorrect Options"

    Click the "AutoCorrect Options..." button to open the detailed settings window.

  4. Uncheck "Internet and network paths with hyperlinks"

    On the "AutoFormat As You Type" tab, uncheck that item.

  5. Why it is useful

    If it bothers you that email addresses or web addresses automatically turn into blue underlined links every time you type them, this setting stops the automatic conversion.

If typing an email or web address into a document keeps auto-converting it into a hyperlink and you find that distracting, turning off this one setting keeps it as plain text instead.
