How to Auto-Fit Table Columns to Content in Word

Tap each step to see how to auto-fit a Word table to its content.

  1. Click inside the table you want to resize

Click any cell in the table whose columns and rows you want to fit to their content.

  2. Open the Layout tab and click AutoFit

With the table selected, go to the Layout tab and click AutoFit in the Cell Size group.

  3. Choose AutoFit Contents

From the dropdown, select AutoFit Contents to resize each column's width to match its longest entry.

  4. Also try AutoFit Window

If you want the whole table to match the page width instead, use AutoFit Window from the same menu.

  5. Why it helps

When some cells overflow with text while others sit mostly empty, AutoFit instantly resizes every column to match its content, giving you a tidier, easier-to-read table.

Tired of dragging column borders by hand?

Manually dragging each column border to fit text is slow and rarely produces even results. AutoFit calculates the right width for every column at once based on its content, so you get a clean table without the guesswork.

Combine it with fixed column widths when needed

AutoFit Contents is great for readability, but if a table needs to keep consistent widths across multiple pages or match a template, switch back to Fixed Column Width from the same menu and set the exact size yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I switch back to a table with fixed-width columns?

Yes, opening the same AutoFit menu and choosing Fixed Column Width keeps whatever width you set regardless of what you type inside the cells.

Can I still make just one column wider than the rest?

Yes, after applying AutoFit you can still drag any single column's border to make just that column wider or narrower.
