How to Rename a Virtual Desktop on Windows

  1. Open Task View

    Click the Task View icon on the taskbar, or press Win+Tab.

  2. Hover over a desktop thumbnail

    Hover your mouse over one of the virtual desktop thumbnails shown at the top.

  3. Click the name to rename it

    Click the name shown below the thumbnail (like "Desktop 1") and type in whatever name you want.

  4. Switch between desktops by name

    Naming desktops "Work" or "Gaming" makes it much easier to tell multiple desktops apart without getting confused.

  5. Why it matters

Names reset when a desktop closes or you restart

A renamed virtual desktop reverts back to its default "Desktop N" label if that desktop is closed or the computer restarts β€” renamed desktops are not preserved. If you rely on the same layout regularly, you will need to rename it again each time.
