How to Use Clipboard History in Windows

Tap through each step to stop losing what you just copied every time you copy something new.

  1. Press "Windows + V"

With your cursor in any text field, press this shortcut to bring up the clipboard history panel.

  2. Click "Turn on" if this is your first time

If the feature is off, click the "Turn on" button that appears in the panel to enable clipboard history.

  3. Copy several pieces of text or images

Copy items one after another as usual with "Ctrl + C," and each one gets added to the history list.

  4. Click an item from the list to paste it

Press "Windows + V" to open the list, then click whichever item you want, and it pastes right where your cursor is.

  5. Pin items you use often

Click the three-dot menu next to an item and choose "Pin" to keep it in the list even after the rest of the history clears.

Tired of losing what you just copied?

When you need to copy several pieces of text one at a time and paste them elsewhere, constantly re-copying gets tedious fast. Turning on clipboard history lets you pick from a list of your recent copies instead of repeating copy-and-paste over and over.

Also worth checking: switching to dark mode

If you are cleaning up your everyday Windows workflow, switching the system to dark mode is another quick change worth trying alongside clipboard history for a more comfortable setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many items does clipboard history hold?

It keeps up to 25 recent items, and once you go past that, the oldest unpinned entries get dropped automatically.

Does the history survive a restart?

Regular entries are cleared on restart, but anything you marked as "Pin" stays in the list even after you reboot.
