How to Install Window Insulation Film

A window insulation film kit is one of the cheapest ways to cut drafts and heat loss through old or leaky windows, and it takes less than an hour per window.

  1. Understand how it works

    The film covers the entire window frame with a thin extra layer of plastic, trapping a pocket of still air between the film and the glass. That trapped air layer is what cuts down on drafts and heat loss through the window in cold weather.

  2. Clean the window frame

    Wipe the frame dry and free of dust before applying anything β€” double-sided tape sticks far better and lasts longer on a clean, dry surface.

  3. Apply double-sided tape around the frame

    Run tape around the entire perimeter of the frame with no gaps, overlapping the tape slightly at the corners so there are no weak points where air can sneak through.

  4. Attach the film

    Peel the tape’s backing a little at a time as you press the film down, working from the top of the frame to the bottom. Cut the film a bit larger than the window so you have slack to work with, and trim the excess afterward.

  5. Shrink it tight with heat

    Once the film is fully attached, run a hair dryer on a hot setting about 5–10 cm (2–4 in) from the surface, moving evenly across the film. This shrinks it taut, removing wrinkles and sagging.

  6. Trim the excess film

    Cut away any film that hangs past the taped edge with a utility knife or scissors for a clean finish.

  7. Plan for ventilation

    Once applied, the film makes it hard to open the window for fresh air, and it’s difficult to remove and reuse without damaging it. Plan to apply it for the cold season and remove it once the weather warms up.

Why a thin layer of plastic makes a real difference

Heat loss through glass happens mainly through convection β€” cold air near the glass sinking and circulating the room air past it. A sealed air gap between the film and the window glass breaks that convection cycle, working the same way double glazing does but at a fraction of the cost and effort.

Getting a wrinkle-free finish takes patience, not force

The most common mistake is rushing the heat-shrinking step, moving the hair dryer too close or too slowly and melting or warping the film instead of tightening it evenly. Keep the dryer moving constantly and work section by section, starting from a corner and fanning outward, for the clearest, most glass-like finish.

Will this work on any type of window?

It works on most flat window frames, but it’s less effective on windows with unusual shapes, curved frames, or frames too narrow for tape to grip well. Check your kit’s instructions for frame width requirements before buying.

Can I reuse the film next winter?
