How to Pitch a Tent, Step by Step

  1. Pick a flat site

    Choose flat ground with no slope and no risk of pooling water, and clear away rocks, sticks, and other debris beforehand.

  2. Lay down a footprint

    Spread out a footprint (groundsheet) first to protect the tent floor and block moisture from the ground.

  3. Assemble and insert the poles

    Connect the separated pole sections, then thread them through the tent's sleeves or clip them into place to raise the frame.

  4. Attach the rainfly

    Drape the waterproof rainfly over the raised tent, lining up the orientation and door position before securing it.

  5. Drive in the stakes

    Push stakes through the corner loops at roughly a 45-degree angle to anchor the tent to the ground against wind.

  6. Tension the guy lines

    Pull the guy lines attached to the rainfly taut and secure them to stakes β€” a tight surface sheds rainwater instead of letting it pool.

Before you're racing daylight at the campsite, or if you just bought a new tent, it's worth pitching it once in your yard or living room first. Learning the pole order and sleeve direction ahead of time makes real setup much faster and smoother.

Teardown generally runs in reverse: pack up the guy lines and stakes first, then remove the rainfly, then take down the poles. Letting the tent dry completely before folding it away helps prevent mold and odor.
