How to Use Steam Cloud Saves

Tap each step to follow along in order.

  1. Open Settings in the Steam client

In the Steam client, go to Steam > Settings to find the global cloud-related options.

  2. Turn on account-wide cloud sync

Under the Cloud tab, make sure "Enable Steam Cloud Synchronization" is turned on β€” if it's off, no game will save to the cloud at all, regardless of its own setting.

  3. Turn on cloud saves for each game

Right-click a game in your library, open Properties, and toggle cloud saves for that specific game under the General tab.

  4. Continue playing on another PC

Launch the game on another PC signed into the same Steam account, and your most recently synced save downloads automatically so you can pick up right where you left off.

  5. Handle sync conflict screens

If your local save and the cloud save are out of step with each other, Steam shows a "Cloud Sync Conflict" dialog, and you'll need to choose which version to keep.

  6. Be careful in offline mode

Progress made without an internet connection doesn't upload to the cloud right away, so it's safer to go back online and let syncing finish before switching to another PC.

  7. Check your storage usage

The Cloud tab in Settings shows how much cloud storage each individual game is currently using.

Essential if you play across more than one PC

If you switch between a desktop and a laptop, or a home and an office PC, cloud saves let you resume from your last save point automatically. Without it turned on, progress made on one PC simply won't show up on another.

Not every game supports it

Cloud saves only work for titles the developer has specifically enabled for Steam Cloud, and support isn't universal. Check a game's Properties before assuming your save will carry over, especially for older or less common titles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every game support cloud saves?

No β€” only games the developer has enabled for Steam Cloud support it. Check the General tab in that game's Properties to see if it's available.

Is there a limit to how much I can store in the cloud?

Yes, each game gets its own allotted cloud storage from Steam, and syncing can stop working for that game once you exceed it.
