How to Organize Conversations with Slack Threads

  1. Reply to a message to start a thread

    Hover over the message you want to reply to and click the Reply in thread icon that appears to start a thread.

  2. Keep the conversation going in the thread

    Continue the related back-and-forth inside the thread panel that opens on the right, so the main channel doesn't get cluttered with side conversations.

  3. Also send it to the channel

    When writing a thread reply, check Also send to #channel at the bottom to have your reply show up in the main channel too.

  4. Check thread notifications

    Threads you started or replied to notify you automatically when a new reply comes in, and you can toggle that on or off yourself with the bell icon at the top of the thread.

  5. See every thread in one place

    Click the Threads icon in the sidebar or at the top to see every thread you're part of gathered on one screen.

  6. Unfollow a thread

    For threads you no longer want notifications from, choose Turn off notifications for this thread from the More menu.

Channel Getting Cluttered with Messages?

If every reply gets posted straight to the channel, it gets hard to follow the flow of conversation. Keeping replies inside threads groups related messages together and keeps the whole channel far more readable.

Need to Escalate to a Call?

If a thread discussion drags on and would be faster to hash out live, jumping into a Slack huddle or video call is often the quicker path forward.

Do thread replies always show up in the channel too?

No β€” unless you check Also send to the channel, a thread reply is only visible to people who open that thread; it won't appear in the main channel view.

Can I get notified about a thread I didn't start?

Yes β€” once you reply to a thread that someone else started, you'll automatically be notified whenever a new reply is posted to it.
