What a surfactant actually does

A surfactant is a molecule with one end that binds to oil and one end that binds to water, letting it lift oil, dirt, and product buildup off the scalp and hair so water can rinse it away. It's the surfactant, not any conditioning or "nourishing" ingredient added on top, that does the actual cleaning in shampoo.

Sulfate-based surfactants (SLS, SLES)

Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) are strong, efficient cleansers that produce rich, dense foam and remove oil and product buildup thoroughly. That same cleansing strength can strip natural scalp oils and irritate sensitive or already-dry scalps, especially with SLS, which tends to be harsher than the ethoxylated SLES.

Amino acid-based surfactants
