How to Print an Envelope from Word

Tap through each step to print a properly formatted envelope.

  1. Open the Mailings tab

Click "Mailings" in the top menu of Word.

  2. Click "Envelopes"

In the "Create" group, select "Envelopes."

  3. Enter the recipient and return address

In the Envelopes dialog, type the delivery address and, separately, your own return address.

  4. Choose the correct envelope size

Click "Options" and pick the envelope size that matches the physical envelope you are using.

Skip handwriting every envelope

For mailing invitations, official letters, or small-batch mailings, hand-addressing each envelope is slow and inconsistent. Word's built-in envelope tool formats and positions both addresses correctly for standard envelope sizes, so all you need to do is load paper and print.

Getting the orientation right the first time

The most common printing mistake is feeding the envelope in the wrong direction, which prints text upside-down or off the edge. The Envelopes dialog's preview pane shows a small diagram of the correct feed orientation for your printer β€” check it and, if unsure, print a single test envelope before running a full batch.

Frequently Asked Questions

The printed text lands in the wrong spot on my envelope. What went wrong?

This is almost always a feed orientation issue. Check the small feed diagram in the Envelope Options dialog and match it to how your specific printer's tray is oriented, then run a test print.

Can I add a logo or return address that saves automatically for next time?

Yes β€” enter your return address once and check "Omit" or leave it filled to have Word remember it as your default return address for future envelopes on that machine.
