How to Record Audio and Insert It into a PowerPoint Slide

Tap each step to see how to record audio into a PowerPoint slide.

  1. Select the slide you want to record on

Go to the slide where you want to add a voice explanation.

  2. Click Insert β†’ Audio β†’ Record Audio

On the Insert tab, in the Media group, click Audio, then choose Record Audio.

  3. Click record, then click stop when finished

Click the red record button to start, speak your explanation, and click stop when you're done.

  4. Reposition the speaker icon on the slide

A small speaker icon appears on the slide once recording finishes; drag it wherever you want it placed.

  5. Why it helps

When you're building material that doesn't need a live presenter, recording a short explanation on each slide lets viewers play it back and follow along on their own.

Need a deck that doesn't need a presenter?

For online courses or presentations shared asynchronously, recording a short voice explanation on every slide means your audience can hit play and understand the material without you being there to narrate it.

Also worth learning: using the laser pointer during live talks

For situations where you're presenting live instead, PowerPoint's built-in laser pointer tool (hold Ctrl and click-drag, or use the pen tools during Slide Show) is a useful complement β€” it lets you draw attention to specific parts of a slide in real time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I re-record audio after I've already recorded it?

Yes. Click the speaker icon to bring up playback controls, where you can delete the existing recording and record a new one.

Can I use this together with automatic slide advance?

Yes. Using the Record Slide Show feature captures your slide timing along with the narration, producing something that plays back like a video without anyone needing to present it live.
