How to Change Your "About" Status Text on WhatsApp

Tap through each step to see how to update the short text line on your profile.

  1. Open Settings and tap your profile

    Tap Settings, then tap your name and photo at the top.

  2. Tap the "About" field

    Below your name, tap the "About" line, which currently shows your existing text.

  3. Type your new text

    Enter a short line of text, or pick one of the app's preset options like "Available" or "Busy."

  4. Save the change

    Confirm the edit, and it updates immediately for anyone who can see your profile.

  5. Why it's useful

    A short line under your name lets contacts know you're traveling, busy, or simply gives your profile a bit of personality, without sending anyone a direct message.

This is not the same as posting a Status update

WhatsApp's "About" text is a permanent line that stays until you change it again, shown whenever someone views your contact profile. This is a different feature from posting a photo, video, or text Status that disappears after 24 hours, which is covered in our separate guide to posting a WhatsApp Status update.

Who can see your About text

By default it's visible to your contacts, but the visibility can be narrowed in privacy settings the same way as a profile photo, so it doesn't have to be shown to everyone who has your number saved.

Yes, emojis and most special characters can be freely mixed in with regular text.

Can I hide my About text from specific people only?

The visibility setting generally applies to broad groups (everyone, contacts, or nobody) rather than letting you exclude individual people one at a time, unlike Status privacy which allows a more granular exclude list.
