How to Search Your Chat History in a Messaging App

Tap through each step to see how to search inside a chat, and across every chat at once.

  1. Open the conversation you want to search

    Go into the specific chat where you think the message was sent.

  2. Open that chat's menu or search icon

    Look for a search (magnifying glass) icon, usually in the chat's top menu.

  3. Type the keyword you remember

    Enter a word or phrase from the message, and matching results appear as you type.

  4. Tap a result to jump straight to it

    Tapping a search result scrolls the chat directly to that message's position in the conversation.

  5. Search across every conversation at once

    The app's main search bar, rather than one inside a single chat, searches your keyword across all your conversations, not just one.

No more scrolling for a conversation from months ago

Trying to find an address or meeting time from a conversation months back used to mean scrolling for ages. A keyword search jumps straight to it instead.

Combine this with a calendar-based jump if you do not remember any keywords

If you can't recall a specific word but do remember roughly when the conversation happened, a calendar-based jump-to-date feature (covered in our separate guide) is often the faster route -- the two search methods complement each other.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I search for photos or files, not just text?

Most apps have a separate "Media" or "Files" tab inside each chat that collects photos, videos, and documents by type, apart from the text search.

Does search find deleted messages?

No -- once a message is deleted, it no longer appears in search results, so anything important is worth backing up or saving separately beforehand.
