How to Stop Being Added to Unwanted WhatsApp Groups

Tap through each step to see how to control who can add you to a group chat.

  1. Open Settings and go to Privacy

    Tap Settings, then Privacy.

  2. Tap "Groups"

Find the "Groups" entry inside the Privacy menu.

  3. Choose "My Contacts" or a narrower option

Select a stricter option than the default "Everyone" so only people already in your contacts (or a narrower list) can add you directly.

  4. Approve or decline invites from outside that group

Anyone who doesn't qualify has to send you a private invite link instead, which you can accept or ignore rather than being added automatically.

  5. Why it's useful

If strangers keep adding you to promotional or spam group chats, this setting stops it at the source instead of forcing you to mute or leave each group individually after the fact.

Existing contacts are not affected

This setting targets people outside your contact list; anyone already saved as a contact can generally still add you to a group as usual once you choose "My Contacts," so your everyday groups keep working normally.

This only blocks future invites, not groups you're already in

Changing this setting doesn't remove you from group chats you were added to before you changed it -- you still need to leave those individually if you want out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I still know when someone tries to add me?

Yes -- instead of being added directly, you get a private invite you can choose to accept, so you're not simply cut off from every new group.

Can I block a specific person from adding me without changing the setting for everyone?

The main "Groups" privacy setting applies broadly, but blocking a specific contact's number separately also prevents that person from adding you to a group.
