How to Add a Contact by Phone Number on Telegram

  1. Open the Contacts section

    Go to your Telegram contacts list from the main menu.

  2. Tap the add-contact button

    Tap the "+" or "Add Contact" button.

  3. Enter a name and phone number

    Type in the person's name and phone number, including the country code.

  4. Confirm to add them

    Tap Done or the checkmark to save the new contact.

  5. Or let contact sync do it automatically

    If you enable contact syncing, anyone saved in your phone's address book who's already on Telegram is added automatically, without doing this manually.

You can add someone without saving them to your phone first

Unlike apps that only pull contacts from your phone's address book, Telegram lets you add a name and number directly inside the app, so the person doesn't need to already be saved in your phone's contacts.

What happens if the number isn't on Telegram

You can still save the contact, but it stays as a regular phone contact entry with no Telegram-specific profile until that person joins the app, at which point it automatically links up.
