Jira Basics: How to Track Issues

Jira can look intimidating with all its fields and settings, but tracking an issue from creation to done comes down to a handful of steps.

  1. Create a new issue

Click the Create button and choose an issue type such as Task, Bug, or Story. The specific fields you need to fill in vary slightly depending on the type you pick.

  2. Fill in the issue details

Write a clear summary (title) and a detailed description of the work in the description field, and assign the issue to the correct project.

  3. Assign an owner and set priority

Use the Assignee field to designate who will handle the work, and set the Priority field so teammates can see urgency at a glance.

  4. Move the issue across the board

On a kanban or scrum board, drag the issue card from To Do to In Progress, and then to Done once it is finished, so the board reflects real-time progress.

  5. Add the issue to a sprint

Dragging an issue from the backlog into the active sprint adds it to the list of work planned for that cycle.

  6. Organize issues with labels and components

Using the Labels and Components fields lets you group issues by feature or area, making them easier to filter and search later.

  7. Leave comments on an issue

Use the comment section at the bottom of an issue to note progress or ask questions, and mention a specific teammate with the @ symbol to notify them directly.

For teams that need structured issue tracking

Jira lets you record an owner, status, and priority for every single issue, so even when several people are working at once, a quick look at the board makes it clear who is handling what and by when.

Looking for something lighter?

If Jira's structure feels like more than you need, a simpler card-based board tool that focuses on visual movement of tasks across a few columns, without the extra fields and configuration Jira offers, may fit smaller or less process-heavy teams better.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to use sprints?

No -- sprints are a concept from Scrum, where work is planned in fixed time periods. Teams that use a kanban board can run Jira perfectly well without sprints at all.

Can I change an issue type later?

Yes. Open the issue, click the issue-type icon near the top, and you can change it to another type such as Task, Bug, or Story.
