How to Turn On iCloud Photo Storage Optimization on iPhone

If your iPhone is running low on storage because of your photo library, iCloud Photos storage optimization can free up space automatically without deleting anything.

  1. Understand what optimization actually does

    With this setting on, full-resolution originals are uploaded to iCloud and a smaller, space-saving version stays on your iPhone. The originals are not deleted β€” they live in iCloud and download back to your device automatically whenever you open or edit that photo, as long as you have a connection.

  2. Turn it on

    A space-saving version is a lower-resolution thumbnail. If you try to open, edit, print, or share a photo at full quality while offline and its original has not already been downloaded, you will get a blurry preview or a loading spinner until you reconnect.

  5. Recently viewed originals stay cached temporarily

    iOS keeps recently downloaded full-resolution originals on the device for a while to avoid re-downloading them repeatedly, then automatically clears older cached originals back to space-saving versions as storage fills up again.

Why this is different from just deleting photos

Optimization is not a cleanup tool in the sense of freeing space by discarding content β€” every original photo and video still exists, just moved to iCloud instead of taking up local storage. This makes it reversible: switching back to 'Download and Keep Originals' re-downloads everything at full resolution over time.

Storage plan matters here

This feature relies on having enough iCloud storage to hold your full library, which for most people beyond a small free allotment means a paid iCloud+ plan. If your iCloud storage itself fills up, syncing pauses and new photos may stop being optimized correctly until you free up iCloud space or upgrade your plan.
