How to Customize the iPhone Action Button

  1. Check supported models

    The Action Button debuted with the iPhone 15 Pro lineup, and starting with the iPhone 16 lineup it's standard on every model, including the base version.

  2. Open Action Button in Settings

    In the Settings app, select "Action Button" to see the list of functions you can assign, arranged left to right.

  3. Choose the function you want

    Swipe through options like Silent Mode, Focus, Camera, Flashlight, Voice Memo, Magnifier, Translate, and Shortcut, then use the button at the bottom of the screen to test how it behaves before saving.

  4. Press and hold to activate

    Once set, the assigned function runs only when you press and hold the side button β€” a quick press does nothing.

  5. Connect a Shortcut for a custom action

    Choosing "Shortcut" lets you link an automation saved in the Shortcuts app, so you can build a custom action like launching several apps at once or changing a specific setting.

    Unlike the old mute switch, which only ever did one thing, the Action Button lets you freely swap in whatever function you use most for the situation and trigger it instantly.
