International Power Plug Types Explained

Outlets were never standardized worldwide, so knowing the basics before a trip saves a lot of last-minute adapter shopping.

Type A and B (North America, Japan, parts of Central America)

Type A has two flat parallel pins; Type B adds a third round grounding pin. Both are typically paired with 100–127V power, noticeably lower voltage than most of the rest of the world.

Type C, the "Europlug" (most of Europe, much of South America and Asia)

Two round pins, ungrounded, and one of the most widely compatible shapes worldwide since many countries' sockets accept it even if their main plug type is different. Used with 220–240V power in most regions.

Type G (UK, Ireland, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia)

Three rectangular pins arranged in a triangle, and almost always built with an internal fuse in the plug itself. Used with 220–240V power.

Type I (Australia, New Zealand, mainland China, Argentina)

Two flat pins angled toward each other in a V-shape, sometimes with a third grounding pin below them. Used with 220–240V power.

Plug adapter vs. voltage converter β€” very different things

A plug adapter only changes the physical shape of the plug so it fits a different outlet; it does not change voltage at all. A voltage converter changes the actual electricity. Most phone, laptop, and camera chargers already accept both 110–127V and 220–240V (check the fine print on the charger for something like "INPUT: 100–240V"), so only a shape adapter is needed β€” but heat-generating devices like hair dryers or clothing irons often are not dual-voltage and can be damaged, or become a fire risk, without a real converter.

Why the world never standardized on one plug

Electrification happened independently, country by country, in the early 20th century, well before any international body proposed a shared standard. By the time standards existed, each country had too much plug-and-socket infrastructure already built to make switching worthwhile, which is why the patchwork persists today.

Always check the appliance label before traveling

Look for a voltage input range printed on the device or charger itself. If it lists a single voltage rather than a range, a shape-only adapter is not enough, and using it on the wrong voltage can damage the device or create a genuine safety hazard.
