Object of the Game

Two teams of 7 players (including a goalkeeper) use their hands to move the ball and score by throwing it into the opponent's goal. A match runs 60 minutes across two 30-minute halves, and like soccer the team with more goals wins -- but goals come much faster.

The Three-Step Rule

A player holding the ball may take a maximum of three steps before they must dribble, pass, or shoot within three seconds. Taking a fourth step without dribbling is called 'traveling' and turns possession over to the other team.

The Goal Area (6-Meter Line)

The 6-meter semicircle in front of each goal is off-limits to everyone except the goalkeeper. The Fast Break

After stopping an opponent's attack, a team pushes the ball forward quickly to score before the opposing defense and goalkeeper can reset. Because the court is relatively small and the pace so quick, fast-break opportunities come up constantly.

Because the court is relatively compact and the 3-second/3-step rule keeps attacks moving quickly, combined scores well above 50 points are common in a single handball match.
