How to Record a Google Meet Call

Recording lets teammates who couldn't attend catch up later. Here's how to do it in Google Meet.

  1. Check whether recording is available

Recording is only available on paid Google Workspace plans, and an administrator may also need to enable the feature for your organization before anyone can use it.

  2. Start the recording

Open the activities menu at the bottom of the call and select "Record meeting." Once it starts, every participant sees a notice on screen that the meeting is being recorded.

  3. Set host controls

From the host controls settings, a host can restrict who is allowed to start recording or captions to themselves only, preventing participants from turning recording on or off on their own.

  4. Stop the recording

Select "Stop recording" from the activities menu to end it. It may take a little time afterward for the file to finish processing and saving.

  5. Find where the recording is saved

The finished recording is saved to the meeting organizer's Google Drive, inside a "Meet Recordings" folder, in a subfolder for that specific meeting.

A record for anyone who missed the meeting

Recording is useful whenever you want to share what happened with a teammate who couldn't attend, or simply revisit the conversation later. The file stays available in Google Drive long after the call ends.

Splitting a large meeting into smaller groups

If you also need to break a large meeting into smaller group discussions, most video call platforms offer a breakout-room feature that lets you split participants and bring them back together afterward.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I record a meeting on a free personal account?

Do participants know when a meeting is being recorded?

Yes β€” as soon as recording starts, every participant sees an on-screen notice that the meeting is being recorded, so no separate announcement is required.
