How to Take and Organize Notes with Google Keep

Tap a step to see it in order.

  1. Create a new note

In keep.google.com or the Google Keep app, click the note-taking box and type a title and content. There's no save button — it saves automatically as soon as you click elsewhere.

  2. Sort notes with labels

Open a note's More (⋮) menu and choose Label to create a new label or apply an existing one, then find notes by topic from the sidebar.

  3. Give a note a color

Click the palette icon at the bottom of a note to pick a background color — handy for visually separating categories like work, personal, and ideas.

  4. Switch to a checklist

Choose Show checkboxes from the More menu to turn a note into an itemized list, checking each item off as you complete it.

  5. Set a reminder

Click the bell icon on a note to get notified at a specific date and time, or when you arrive at a specific location.

  6. Export to Google Docs

Choose Copy to Google Docs from the More menu to turn a note into a new Google Doc — useful when you want to expand a quick note into something longer.

  7. Pin and archive notes

Pin frequently checked notes to the top with the pin icon, and tidy up your list by archiving notes you no longer need.

For Jotting Down a Thought in Seconds

Google Keep opens instantly on the web, Android, or iPhone as soon as you sign in, so you can capture an idea or to-do in seconds — no install required if you're just using it in a browser.

Simple by Design, Not Limited

It skips the folders and formatting of a full note-taking app on purpose — colors, labels, and pinning are enough to keep a large pile of quick notes navigable without adding friction to capturing them in the first place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I share a Google Keep note with someone else?

Yes — click the collaborator icon at the bottom of a note and enter an email address to let that person view and edit the note with you.

Does a deleted note disappear immediately?

No — a deleted note moves to Trash and stays recoverable for a set period before being permanently removed.
