How to Switch Between Multiple Gmail Accounts

Tap a step to follow along in order.

  1. Click your profile icon

Click the round profile icon in the top-right corner of Gmail.

  2. Choose "Add another account"

Select "Add another account" from the menu and sign in with the Google account you want to add.

  3. Switch between accounts

Clicking that same profile icon again shows your list of signed-in accounts β€” click any one to switch to it instantly.

  4. Keep multiple accounts open at once

Opening each account in its own separate browser tab lets you check several inboxes at the same time without switching back and forth.

  5. Remove an account

For an account you no longer need, choose "Remove account from this device" from the profile menu to take it off the list.

Keep work and personal accounts separate

A Google account lets you register several accounts at once without ever signing out, and switch between them with a single click. This is especially useful if you want to keep work email and personal email cleanly separated instead of mixing them in one inbox.

Browser profiles offer an even stronger separation

If account-switching within Gmail itself still feels like it mixes things together too much, most browsers also support separate "profiles" β€” essentially a completely separate browser identity with its own bookmarks, extensions, and signed-in accounts. Setting up one browser profile for work and another for personal use keeps everything, not just Gmail, cleanly separated at the browser level.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many accounts can I add?

The official limit is generous enough that it rarely comes up in everyday use, so most people never need to think about hitting a cap.

Do I get notified about new mail on accounts I'm not currently viewing?

If you have browser notifications turned on, you can still get notified about new mail arriving in an account you're not actively looking at.
