How to Mark All Gmail Messages as Read at Once

Clearing hundreds of unread Gmail messages does not require opening them one by one.

  1. Open the inbox or label you want to clear

    Go to the specific folder or label (Inbox, a category tab, or a custom label) you want to mark as read, since the "select all" action only applies to what is currently in view.

  2. Click the select-all checkbox

    At the top-left of the message list, click the checkbox to select all the currently visible messages on that page.

  3. Expand the selection to everything, not just the page

    After checking the box, Gmail shows a banner offering to select all conversations matching the search or folder, not just the roughly 50 shown on screen -- click that link to include every message.

  4. Use the "Mark as read" option

    With everything selected, click the envelope icon (or the More menu, then "Mark as read") in the toolbar above the message list.

  5. Do it from the Gmail mobile app if needed

    In the app, long-press a message to enter selection mode, tap the top banner to select all matching messages, then tap the three-dot menu and choose "Mark as read."

Why the on-screen checkbox alone is not enough

Gmail loads messages in pages of roughly 50, so simply clicking the header checkbox only selects what is currently rendered. The banner that appears afterward, offering to select every conversation matching the current view, is the part that actually clears a count in the thousands.

Filtering before marking read

For a specific cleanup, like "everything from newsletters" or "everything older than a year," running a search or applying a filter first, then selecting all within those results, avoids accidentally marking read messages you actually want to see.
