How to Cancel a Scheduled Email in Gmail

As long as the send time has not passed, canceling a scheduled Gmail message only takes a few clicks.

  1. Open the Scheduled folder

In the left sidebar (click "More" if it is collapsed), select "Scheduled." This folder holds every email waiting to go out, separate from Drafts and Sent.

  2. Find the specific email

Scheduled messages show their planned send time next to the subject line, which makes it easy to spot the one you want to stop if you have more than one queued.

  3. Open it and choose "Cancel send"

Click into the email to open it, then click the "Cancel send" button. This immediately pulls it out of the send queue.

  4. Confirm it landed back in Drafts

Once canceled, the email moves to your Drafts folder exactly as it was, so you can edit it, resend it later, or delete it entirely.

  5. Know the cutoff

Cancellation only works up until the exact scheduled moment; once that time passes, Gmail sends it and it can no longer be pulled back from the Scheduled folder.

What actually happens when you cancel

Canceling does not delete the email -- it interrupts the send and converts it back into an ordinary draft, with all your original text, recipients, and attachments intact, so nothing is lost.

Scheduling is not the same as Undo Send

Gmail's separate "Undo Send" feature only gives you a short window (a handful of seconds, configurable in settings) after clicking Send on a normal email. Canceling a scheduled send is different -- it works any time before the scheduled moment, which can be hours or days out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I reschedule instead of fully canceling?

Yes -- open the scheduled email, cancel it to move it back to Drafts, then use "Schedule send" again from the compose window to pick a new time.

Does canceling work the same way on mobile?

Yes, the Gmail app has its own Scheduled folder under the menu, and the same "Cancel send" option appears when you open a queued message there.
