How to Pull Live Stock Prices Into Excel With the Stocks Data Type

  1. Type a company name or ticker symbol into a cell

    Enter the name of the company you want price data for (for example, Apple) or its ticker symbol into a cell.

  2. Select the cell and click the Data tab

    With the cell you just typed into still selected, go to the Data tab on the ribbon.

  3. Click Stocks in the Data Types group

    Clicking the Stocks icon recognizes the cell's text and converts it into a data card marked with a small company icon.

  4. Use the Insert Data icon to pull out the field you want

    Click the icon that appears next to the converted cell and choose a field like Price or Change to extract it as a value in a neighboring cell.

  5. Why it is useful

    Instead of checking prices on an outside site and typing them in by hand, just typing a company name into Excel lets you pull in live prices and related data automatically.

Does this work for every stock exchange?

Coverage is broadest for large, well-known international companies, and support varies for smaller or more local exchanges. If a company name is not recognized, try entering its exact ticker symbol instead.

Does the value keep updating in real time?

It refreshes when you reopen the file or click Data then Refresh All, but it does not continuously update in real time on its own.
