Tap each step to follow along in order.

  1. Right-click a sheet tab

Right-click the tab of the sheet whose color you want to change or hide.

  2. Choose "Tab Color"

Select "Tab Color" from the menu and pick the color you want.

  3. Hide the sheet

Select "Hide" from the same right-click menu to remove that sheet from view.

  4. Unhide a hidden sheet

Right-click any sheet tab and select "Unhide" to see a list of hidden sheets you can bring back.

  5. Why is this useful?

In a workbook with many sheets, color-coding tabs or hiding rarely-used reference sheets keeps everything far easier to manage.

If a workbook with many sheets feels cluttered

When you are working with a workbook made up of many sheets, giving each one a distinct tab color or hiding the ones used only for reference can make the whole file much easier to navigate at a glance.

Check out freeze panes too

Freeze panes is another handy feature for keeping a large spreadsheet organized, letting you lock header rows or columns in place while you scroll.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a hidden sheet still be referenced in formulas?

Yes. A hidden sheet is simply not visible on screen β€” formulas on other sheets can still reference it and calculate with it completely normally.

Can I hide or recolor several sheets at once?

Yes. Hold Ctrl to select multiple sheet tabs together, then right-click to hide them or change their color all at the same time.
