How to Add Headers and Footers in Excel

Give a multi-page report a professional finish with headers and footers that repeat on every page.

  1. Click "Insert > Header & Footer"

On the Insert tab, click "Header & Footer" to switch into Page Layout view.

  2. Click the header area and type

Click the header area at the top of the page and type a company name or document title.

  3. Insert the date or file name automatically

Use the icons in the "Header & Footer Elements" group to insert the current date, file name, and similar details automatically.

  4. Why it matters

Adding a title and page numbers to a report that prints across many pages makes the whole document far easier to manage and look far more professional.

A more professional finish for multi-page reports

When a spreadsheet prints across several pages, it's worth putting a title and page number on every one of them. The header and footer feature applies your changes to every page automatically, so you only have to set it up once.

Three independent zones: left, center, right

Each header and footer area is actually split into three separate sections β€” left, center, and right β€” that you can fill independently. A common pattern is a document title on the left, the page number in the center, and the current date on the right, all updating automatically as the document changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I see the header and footer on screen at all times?

They aren't visible in Normal view. Switch to Page Layout view or open Print Preview to see them.

Can I put different content on the left, center, and right?

Yes β€” each header and footer area is divided into three independent sections, so you can type something different in each one.
