How to Use Excel's Go To Special (Select Blank Cells and More)

Tap a step to see more detail.

  1. Select the range you want to check

Highlight the full range of the table where you want to find blank cells or cells matching a specific condition.

  2. Open Home then Find & Select

On the Home tab, click the Find & Select menu.

  3. Choose Go To Special

In the dropdown menu, click Go To Special.

  4. Pick the condition you need

Choose the condition you are looking for - Blanks, Formulas, Comments, and so on - then click OK.

  5. Why it is useful

When you need to find only the blank cells among hundreds of rows and fill them in or apply formatting, this saves you from hunting for them one by one by eye.

Find every blank cell at once and fill them in together

When you need to fill the same value into scattered blank cells across thousands of rows, Go To Special lets you select every matching cell automatically instead of clicking through them individually.

Try checking for duplicate values too

If you are cleaning up messy spreadsheet data, it is worth also learning how to find and remove duplicate values - between removing duplicates and selecting cells by condition, you can clean up most common data problems without writing a single formula.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fill all the selected blank cells with the same value at once?

Yes. With all the blank cells selected, type the value you want and press Ctrl+Enter - it fills every selected blank cell with that same value in one step.

Can I find only the cells that contain formulas?

Yes. Choosing Formulas in Go To Special selects only the cells that contain a formula rather than a typed-in value, so you can review them separately.
