How to Set Excel to Fit Printing to One Page

Tap a step to see it in order.

  1. Open the "Page Layout" tab

Click the Page Layout tab on the ribbon.

  2. Find the "Scale to Fit" group

Check the Width and Height options in the Scale to Fit group.

  3. Set both to "1 page"

Setting both Width and Height to "1 page" automatically shrinks the data to fit on one sheet.

  4. Check Print Preview

Press Ctrl + P to confirm it actually fits on a single page before printing.

When a table just barely spills onto a second page

It's common for a table to overflow by just a row or column, pushing the printout onto a second sheet. Fit to Page automatically shrinks the content so it lands neatly on one page instead.

Width and Height can be set independently

You don't have to set both to "1 page" together -- for example, setting only Width to "1 page" while leaving Height as "Automatic" keeps all columns on one page width-wise while still allowing the printout to spread across multiple pages vertically, which is useful for a table that's wide but has many rows.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if the text shrinks so much it becomes hard to read?

Instead of "1 page," try entering a specific percentage under Scale, or reduce the page margins to free up more space -- both are worth trying together.

I want it to print across multiple pages again -- how do I undo this?

Set both Width and Height back to "Automatic," and the printout returns to its original size spread across as many pages as it needs.
