How to Change the Chart Type in Excel

Tap a step to see how it works.

  1. Click the chart you want to change

Click the chart whose type you want to switch to select it.

  2. Open the Chart Design tab

Selecting a chart reveals the Chart Design tab β€” click it.

  3. Click Change Chart Type

In the Type group, click Change Chart Type.

  4. Choose the new chart type

Select the type you want β€” bar, line, pie, and so on β€” then click OK.

  5. Why this helps

It lets you easily switch to a chart form that fits your data visually better without rebuilding it from scratch, so you can present the same data in different ways.

When your chart doesn't quite fit the data

A chart you built as a bar chart might actually communicate a trend over time more clearly as a line chart. You don't need to rebuild the whole chart from scratch β€” you can simply swap the chart type.

Consider a combo chart too

If your data mixes very different scales β€” like revenue and a percentage β€” a combo chart with a secondary axis is worth exploring as well, letting each series use the chart type and axis that suits it best.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does changing the chart type reset the colors or style?

The basic color theme is usually kept, but some formatting that isn't supported by the new chart type may adjust automatically.

Can I change just one data series to a different chart type instead of the whole chart?

Yes. Click to select just the series you want, then change the chart type β€” only that series switches to the new form.
