Changing your own oil isn't complicated once you've done it once, and it can save a fair amount over a shop visit.

  1. Gather your tools and get access underneath

    Get the correct-grade oil, a matching oil filter, a drain pan, a wrench set, and either ramps or a jack plus jack stands, and park on level ground.

  2. Warm the engine briefly, then shut it off

    Run the engine for a few minutes so the oil flows more easily, then turn it off and let things cool slightly to avoid burns before working underneath.

  3. Remove the drain plug and drain the old oil

    Position the drain pan under the drain plug, remove it, and let the old oil fully drain out.

  4. Replace the oil filter

    Once draining is done, remove the old filter with a filter wrench, lightly coat the new filter's rubber gasket with fresh oil, and install it.

  5. Reinstall the drain plug and add new oil

    Tighten the drain plug to the correct torque, then pour in the correct amount of new oil for your vehicle through the fill cap.

  6. Check the level with the dipstick and test drive

    Start the engine and confirm the oil warning light turns off, then check the dipstick after a few minutes to make sure the level is correct and there are no leaks.

  7. Dispose of the used oil the right way

    Never pour used oil down a drain or onto the ground -- take it to a shop, service station, or local collection facility that accepts used motor oil.

Know your vehicle's specific specs first

Oil grade, filter part number, and drain-plug torque all vary by vehicle, so check your owner's manual before starting rather than assuming a generic spec applies. This is general guidance -- when unsure, a quick manual check or a call to a shop is worth it.

When DIY is not the better option

If your car sits low to the ground, if you don't have a safe way to lift it, or if there's any oil leak you can't identify, having a shop handle it is the safer and often cheaper option once you factor in your time and risk.
