How to Unsend or Recall an Email You Just Sent

You only have a short window to stop a mistaken email -- here's how it works on the two most common email platforms.

  1. Gmail: use Undo Send

    Right after sending, click "Undo" in the small bar that appears at the bottom of the screen. In Settings, you can extend this window up to 30 seconds instead of the default 5 -- since it actually just delays the send, it works the same way no matter who the recipient is.

  2. Outlook: try Message Recall

    Open the sent email from your Sent folder and choose "Recall This Message." This only has a chance of working if the recipient is in the same Microsoft 365 or Exchange organization, and it often fails if they've already opened it, depending on the organization's settings -- it doesn't work at all for external addresses like Gmail or Yahoo.
