How to Set Up Automatic Email Forwarding

Tap a step to see how it works.

  1. Open your mail settings

Go to the 'Forwarding and POP/IMAP' tab, or the 'Forwarding' menu, in your email settings.

  2. Add a forwarding address

Enter the other email address you want to receive mail at, and complete the verification step.

  3. Choose how the original is handled

You can choose to keep the original message in your inbox, or archive it automatically as soon as it's forwarded.

  4. Set up filter-based forwarding

If you only want to forward mail from a specific sender or with a certain subject, creating a filter lets you forward just those messages instead of everything.

  5. When this is useful

Auto-forwarding is useful when you want to check a work and a personal account from one inbox, or when you're planning to switch to a new email address.

Stop checking two inboxes separately

If checking a work account and a personal account separately feels like a hassle, setting up auto-forwarding lets you read everything from a single inbox instead.

Replying from a forwarded message uses the forwarded address

If you reply directly from the address the mail was forwarded to, the reply goes out under that address's name rather than the original account's -- worth keeping in mind if the recipient needs to see a specific sender address in their reply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I reply to a forwarded message?

Yes, but replying directly from the address it was forwarded to sends the reply under that address's name rather than the original account's, so pay attention to which address you're replying from.

Is it safe to set up auto-forwarding?

It's fine as long as you only forward to an address you trust. If you notice a forwarding rule you didn't set up appearing on your account, check your account security immediately, since it's a common sign of unauthorized access.
