How to Organize Discord Channels with Categories

As a server grows past a handful of channels, grouping them into categories keeps things findable for both you and every new member who joins.

  1. Create a category

    Click the "+" next to the server name, or right-click in the channel list and choose "Create Category."

  2. Name the category clearly

    Give it a name that makes its purpose obvious at a glance, like "Announcements," "General Chat," or "Gaming."

  3. Move channels into the category

    Drag an existing channel with your mouse, or use the "Move to category" option in that channel's settings, to place it under the category you want.

  4. Set permissions at the category level

    Permissions set on a category cascade down to every channel inside it by default, saving you from configuring each channel individually.

  5. Reorder categories and channels

    Drag and drop categories and channels in the sidebar to freely rearrange the order, so your most-used channels sit near the top.

  6. Restrict access to a category

    Limiting a category to a specific role lets you build a private cluster of channels β€” a staff-only area, for example β€” without touching individual channel settings.

More channels means more clutter without organization

As a server's membership and channel count grow, finding the right channel gets steadily more annoying. Grouping channels into categories lets even a brand-new member understand the server's structure at a glance.
