How to Manage and Remove Chrome Extensions

Tap through each step to clean up extensions that are slowing your browser down or that you no longer recognize.

  1. Click the puzzle-piece icon in the address bar

Click the puzzle-piece icon in the top-right of Chrome to see a list of your installed extensions.

  2. Click "Manage extensions"

Click "Manage extensions" at the bottom of that list to open the full management screen.

  3. Turn off or "Remove" extensions you no longer use

Flip the toggle off to disable an extension, or click "Remove" to delete it entirely.

  4. Check an extension's permissions (optional)

Click "Details" on any extension to see exactly what data it is allowed to access.

  5. Why it is worth doing

Forgotten extensions that pile up over time can slow your browser down and create security risks, so cleaning them out periodically keeps things lighter and safer.

Browser feeling slow, or seeing extensions you don't remember?

Extensions installed long ago and then forgotten tend to accumulate, and that buildup can drag down browser speed and open up security gaps. Making a habit of reviewing the list regularly and removing what you don't use matters more than it seems.

Also worth checking: reviewing your saved passwords

While you are doing a browser security check, it is a good time to review any passwords saved in the browser as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if I see an extension I never installed?

It was most likely bundled in alongside another program's installation, so if you cannot identify what it is for, it is safest to remove it right away.

Can I just turn an extension off instead of deleting it?

Yes. Turning off the toggle disables it without deleting it, so it stops running but stays available to switch back on later.
