How to Enable Android Developer Options (and What to Watch For)

  1. Read the warning before you start

    Developer Options is a collection of advanced settings meant for building and testing apps, and none of it is needed for everyday use. Changing a setting whose meaning you do not fully understand can drain your battery faster or make apps behave oddly, so proceed carefully.

  2. Go to About Phone (or About Tablet)

    In the Settings app, scroll to the bottom and select About phone or About tablet.

  3. Find the Build Number entry

    On some devices you will need to tap Software information first before Build number appears; on more stock versions of Android, Build number shows up directly on the About phone screen.

  4. Tap Build Number repeatedly

    Tap Build number seven times in quick succession. You will see a message like You are now a few steps away from being a developer, and you may be asked to enter your device's PIN or pattern.

  5. Confirm it is enabled

    Once you see You are now a developer, a new Developer options entry appears in Settings, usually near About phone or inside the System menu.

  6. A common use: USB debugging

    Turning on USB debugging inside Developer Options lets you connect to a computer to install and debug apps, mirror your screen, and more - mainly useful for app developers and some advanced users.

  7. Turn it off again once you are done

    There is no need to leave Developer Options on all the time. Once you are finished, it is safer to switch off the toggle at the top of the Developer Options screen so you do not accidentally change something by mistake.
